One has to acknowledge that on average we have saved more than one human life per day.
Let\u2019s take a look back.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We would like to introduce you to or remind\nyou of four of these people today. Because it is not about numbers or\nstatistics, but about personal fates: lives, family, hope, fear and dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alpha Jor fled Sierra Leone. Head of mission Jan Ribbeck and his crew found the boy along with 16 other survivors in distress at sea. Despite cruel experiences, he brought his smile and cheerfulness with him from a crowded wooden boat to the ALAN KURDI. He had to stay in Malta for almost a year before another EU member country accepted him. His rescuers are in contact with him. We know how hard it was for him and that he is now optimistic about the future. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Qeyz fled Somalia at 16. One morning in June, the FAZ journalist Julia Anton discovered\u00a0 the blue rubber boat with a pair of binoculars carrying 59 people in distress. Julia Anton was on morning watch. A rescued man later said to her, “We would have died without you.” Today Qeyz lives in Finland with four other survivors from this boat. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Manuel was saved together with his mother and father in April. The Nigerian family had been living in Libya for several years. The father repaired air conditioners to feed the family until life there became unbearable. \u201cAs a foreigner you have no rights and no protection in Libya. Your family can become victims of serious violence at any time. \u201dThe family is now safe. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Fatima\u2019s life had only begun eight weeks prior, when the ship\u2019s doctor Barbara H. took the salt water drenched child straight from the rescue boat in November. She watched the dehydrated and malnourished girl all night and handed it over to the Italian coast guard the next morning, along with her parents. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
