Description:

When we talk about Libya, images of war, destruction and human rights abuses spring to mind. Images also come to mind of the people trying to flee to Europe across the central Mediterranean. They are intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard, forced back to Libya, and held in detention centres by the thousands, where they are tortured, enslaved and subjected to many other atrocities.

But what do we actually know about the specific circumstances of those seeking safety, work, dignity and much more in Libya and elsewhere in North-Africa?

What has been happening in Libya since 2014, and what is currently taking place in this country ravaged by civil war?

What is the reality of life like for refugees and migrants in Libya, and what dangers and challenges do they face? And what can we do to help?

With this Academy event, we would like to address these questions – as well as your own – and introduce you to the work of this NGO, the people involved on the ground, and the latest developments in Libya.

About the Speaker:

Refugees in Libya (RiL) is an NGO founded in 2024, but whose roots lie in the ‘100 Days’ protests held in 2021 outside the UNHCR building in Tripoli (Libya). Building on the self-organisation of those affected in Libya, the NGO is committed to standing in solidarity with them and fighting to support refugees and migrants in North Africa: “Our work now connects communities across North Africa and Europe, from emergency protection and documentation to campaigns, strategic litigation and international advocacy,” as RiL describes itself.

Speaker: Lam Magok is Project Manager of the TACKLE Project at Refugees in Libya. Originally from South Sudan, he is a refugee rights advocate and community organizer with lived experience of displacement and migration. Through the TACKLE Project, he coordinates initiatives that challenge racial discrimination and structural racism while strengthening refugee-led advocacy and community participation. His work combines project coordination, partnerships and community engagement to advance equality, human rights and freedom of movement across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
