Migration routes to Europe are constantly changing. Political developments, border controls, EU migration policies, externalisation measures, changing departure points and geographical factors all influence the routes taken by people seeking protection and the conditions they face at sea.
In this Academy event, we will be joined by the Spanish humanitarian search and rescue organisation Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario (SMH). Drawing on their experience of humanitarian search and rescue in the Mediterranean, we will explore shifting migration routes and current developments from a Spanish perspective.
Together, we will look at the changing dynamics of Spain’s maritime migration routes and the humanitarian challenges faced by people on the move and organisations working at sea. We will discuss the cooperation and coordination between humanitarian organisations and state authorities, as well as the different operational and political contexts in Spain, Italy and Greece. We will also examine how European migration policies shape migration routes and affect the conditions in which humanitarian organisations operate.

About the Speaker:
Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario (SMH) is a Spanish humanitarian search and rescue organisation founded in 2015. Its work focuses on protecting the lives, dignity and rights of people on the move along European maritime migration routes. With its rescue vessel AITA MARI, SMH has primarily operated in the Central Mediterranean, carrying out search and rescue missions and providing humanitarian assistance to people in distress at sea. From 2015 to 2023, the organization also operated in rescue and humanitarian aid in Greece.
Speaker: Iñigo Mijangos is the President of Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario and current captain of the AITA MARI.
