Your City Saves Lives: Local communities support sea rescue

Your City Saves Lives is a local fundraising campaign launched by the local council. Whether through a fundraising campaign or a ship sponsorship, the council’s commitment becomes visible, tangible and a shared cause. Your City Saves Lives: Local councils support sea rescue – in a practical, political and local way.

From Political Action, a Collective Movement Emerges:

Municipal Commitment:

- Citizens donate
- The city doubles donations up to a specified amount
- Together, a funding sum for sea rescue is generated

Sea-Eye Supports:

- Provision of information materials
- Support for public relations
- Online infrastructure for fundraising campaigns

How You Can Help:

- Connect locally (initiatives, associations, committed individuals)
- Seek dialogue with political representatives
- Create awareness and recruit allies

How it Works:

1

Submit Application

A municipal representative submits the proposal to support Sea-Eye (in the form of a ship sponsorship).
2

Start your own fundraiser

The city initiates a temporary campaign and calls upon its citizens for support.
3

Form Total Amount

The collected donations are supplemented by municipal funds.
4

Handover of Donations by the City

With the total sum, the city actively supports sea rescue in the Mediterranean.

What is the difference between a ship sponsorship and "Your City Saves Lives"?

A ship sponsorship by a town or local authority is a political decision to provide financial support. “Your City Saves Lives” is the accompanying campaign that engages citizens and raises even more funds.

Is sea rescue even allowed to be supported by municipal funds?

Yes! There is a current legal opinion (in german) that clearly states this is possible. You can view the opinion here.

The majority of the municipal representation (e.g., city council) makes the decision via application and vote.

Who decides on participation?

The respective municipal representation (e.g. city council) makes the decision via application and vote.

Does the city have to conduct a fundraising campaign to take on a sponsorship?

No. You can still become a ship sponsor without running a campaign. However, “Your City Saves Lives” is an opportunity to actively involve the public.

How long does such a campaign run?

It is usually temporary – often over several weeks or months.

What happens to the collected funds?

The donations and municipal funds flow directly into supporting sea rescue operations.

Can I make a difference without a political function?

Yes – absolutely.
Civil society initiatives are often the trigger for political decisions. Your commitment can make a difference.

How many cities are already participating?

Over 300 municipalities are part of the “Safe Harbors” alliance, many of which actively support sea rescue. More than 30 municipalities specifically support the work of Sea-Eye.
